TO THE LATE JIM HENSON
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To love the man I never knew--
Most painful thing I've ever done.
Now your life on Earth is through,
My love for you has just begun.
The fond affection felt before
Was a subconscious kind of love.
My love for Kermit (the god of arms)
Forgot whose arm enlivened the amphibian glove.
Your alter ego was green.
Your alter ego was Kermit's life.
For all your friends who held you close,
My envy green does hold you tight!
But I find I hold a nothingness,
An empty space you used to fill.
I miss the man I never knew,
And I suppose I always will.
ALL IS NOT LOST
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

All is not lost.
I hold you in my arms,
A remnant of your former self,
Yet still the one I cling to.

All is not lost.
You mean more to me than gold.
Even though your soul is cold,
I'm here for you always.

All is not lost.
Friends don't go away.
Even half-a-world away,
We share each other in our hearts.

Lost and found,
To love we are bound.
You're the reason my heart beats.
In silent retreats,
My mind wanders through my memory
To hug you tight.

I sing our song
And know it won't be long
Till we embrace
Face to face.

between-the-lines.txt

BETWEEN THE LINES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Between the lines
In British poet Brian Patten's
"Perhaps,"
My favourite poem
By my favourite poet,
In his amazing book "Storm damage."
Between the tracks,
What Bob & Doug MacKenzie call
A "black hole" between the songs on vinyl records.
Or else, there are songs like colliding galaxies
In which one ends inside its neighbour's beginning,
Quite common in CD tracks by
Alan Parsons,
Who rarely sings
But puts his name on all his productions,
My favourite musician and
A genius
Beyond words
Or notes,
A musical creator
With ghost singers
Selling his name.
His voice is amazing
In "We Play the Game,"
On his album "A Valid Path."
It only took 28 years
For Alan to sing lead vocals,
On one of his own albums,
Without the vocoder's electronic distortions.
Keep singing, Alan;
You don't need stand-ins.
Your voice is music to my ears;
I know that line is corny,
But I used to live in Indiana.
The commercials
Between the scenes
In my favourite show
"Crossing Jordan."
And I don't mean the river,
I mean Jordan Cavanaugh,
a.k.a. actress Jill Hennessy,
who also played an A.D.A. on "Law & Order."
Jill is Superbabe on my Dessert Island List.
Watch "Robocop 3."
She's in it too.
Yes, she's the one.
Read between the lines of
Desperation and delusions
And disappointment
To discover she's married.
I'm still single
At 37,
But it beats being trapped
In any relationship
Built on delusions.
Signing off
Of this central ramble
Between the lines
Between the tracks
Between the dreams
In sidewalk cracks.
Rescue me from this
Incessant babble
In this sinking ship
Without a paddle...
THE MUSIC OF FOREVER
Fiction finds a place in my brain
A place to go without naming the stain
And here we dance with the music of forever
When a single moment changes history
PEOPLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

People everywhere and nowhere--
Beneath a bridge;
Standing in a puddle by the subway tracks;
Wandering down a crowded street feeling empty inside.

People everywhere,
But lost on the radar of other people's minds,
As they rush about, going everywhere,
Passing by the static mass of humanity with nowhere to go.

AND GOD CREATED SEX
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lord,
I don't know how to pray for this.
You know whom I want.
I don't know which one.
As the days change, they rearrange my gaze.
Lord,
I find it so hard to get to know You;
I'm so far away,
But You're so close.
Lord, You say,
"It's better to marry than to burn with passion."
Help me, please!
I'm an inferno!
Lord, I am Yours
And You are mine.
That's what I want
With a bride.
Lord,
Everywhere I turn
I'm confronted by love,
Out of reach of my trembling heart.
Lord,
Which Eve is for me?
"It is not good for the man to be alone," You said.
I hold You to Your word.
Lord,
I don't know how to pray for this.
Words don't work when I feel like this.
Help me, please!
I'm an inferno!
The fire department's not coming,
9-1-1's on a holiday,
And I've lost the fire extinguisher!
My virtue is hanging over a precipice,
And I'm afraid I will fall
Into worldly freedom and even more misery.
She's so far away.
I'm so close to a question.
Unaware, she holds an answer.
HOME IS CALLING
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lost and alone
In a wilderness,
Wondering where you are.

Like a child lost in the shopping mall,
I weep and call,
Waiting for your voice,
Longing for your face,
And in desperate need of your embrace.

The world is too big;
Lost in a sea of humanity
With no one to hold.
Every time I reach out,
A wall goes up,
My wall of fear or your wall of friendship,
Blocking passion
And any hope of ever finding it.

But my song goes on;
To hope is my calling.

Lost and alone
In a wilderness.
In a world of billions,
I only want one to share my life,
And I'm wondering where you are.

My whole life,
I've heard our home calling...

But I don't know where to go.

VALIANT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I could say something valiant
But it wouldn't be true.
Your love for me
Is not my love for you.
When I call you "my friend,"
Things haven't changed.
I'm still crazy for you;
These feelings remain.
Saying, "Hello!" to my beautiful memories of you
Again and again, a thousand times every day!
Asking, "Why?" to these memories so blue,
Memories of tomorrow dreamt again and again.
Tell me why I fell head over heels
For the woman of my dreams if my dreams weren't true.
I want to know, will these feelings ever end?
But if they stay or leave, I'll still always love you!
I could say something valiant,
But my heart holds a flame.
Though the wick has been trimmed,
I melt just the same.
THE CONTINUING QUEST TOWARD UNDERSTANDING MYSELF
(Based on an Imaginary Conversation)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You ask me to name my favourite song.
I ask you to say where we went wrong.
My favourite song is Suzanne Vega's "The Queen and the Soldier."
You answer me,
"We went wrong in another song we shared,
One that made you hope I cared,
But my friend, I know this cannot be."
You ask me to play a different tune.
I answer you, "It's much too soon."
I ask you for a shred of hope.
You say, "That would mean your hope's in shreds."

Well, you've conquered me.
I don't know what I want,
My hope's in shreds,
And all my dreams are dead.

But I love you still.
And I still feel this feeling I'm not sure I feel anymore.
I still wish for things with pessimism,
Still cry these lonely (but not sure they're lonely) tears.
Late teens and early twenties--The Confusing Years.

VALIANT (PART 2)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I could say something valiant
But it wouldn't be true.
I covet you.
I don't let my longing leave.
My hopes don't set you free.
I covet you,
Think more of you
Than I should.
My Saviour patiently waits for me to wake.
Not to covet my neighbour's possessions,
I covet her soul,
Wanting her as my wife,
Forgetting Jesus is life.
I know I'm wrong,
But it feels so good, this pain,
Chasing after the vain,
The selfish desires of a lust-torn heart,
Lust for an artificial filling in the pie of life.
I could say something valiant
But it wouldn't be true.
I covet you.
AMPLIFY MY IGNORANCE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Amplify my ignorance

Block out your critical tone

I've made my mind up

My personal truth
Superscedes any reality

*

Reality laughs at arrogance like this
And goes about its business of carrying out God's plans
While we declare God's non-existence
Though we cry out to Him in calamity
And ask Him (this non-existent Being) where He is

STARDOM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i turned myself in to the cosmic police
who named a supernova after me
a brilliant explosion of narcissism
i wanted to be a star
i got my wish
not realizing I was a star before my fame
fame was the explosion
and I ceased to be what I longed to be
the centre of the universe
(or at least a solar system)
worlds revolving around me
now in fragments of fire
my children all ruined
and i am no more
just a puff of cosmic dust
fame gives way to solitude
titanium-tadpole.txt
Tadpole is an obvious nickname for me, since Tad is my middle name.
This poem explains why I call myself Titanium Tadpole.
TITANIUM TADPOLE (A Medical Thriller)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My right lung collapsed two times
In 1995.
On the lung was found a bubble
Which was probably a gift of birth.
Like most bubbles,
It inevitably burst,
Causing a deflation of ego
And a month of misery,
Until the affectionately named
University "Death Center"
Stopped giving me cough syrup
And sent me to the hospital
For an X-ray.

Words I never expected came:
"You have a partially collapsed right lung,
And we're admitting you."
There went any plans I had for a while.

Through a small incision in my chest,
I was hooked up to the tube of a vacuum machine
Which sucked out the air and fluid
That had built up outside the collapsed lung.
This caused it to naturally re-expand.

It worked. Once again, I was full of hot air.
The doctor said to me
A chance of one in three
Said that I'd be back for more.

Naturally, he was right.
Take 2!

Re-expansion once again,
And then the fun began.

To find the bad bubble's home
On Terra Inflata,
A cat scan was entailed...
(Sorry, I couldn't resist)...

I always thought a cat scan would be fun.
It's not.
Try telling a cat to stay still for several minutes.
(Sorry, again).

Through more small incisions,
Surgery began.
A cutter-stapler removed that pesky, popping bubble,
And sealed the re-expanded lung shut with titanium staples.

A golf-ball-sized piece of my right lung is now gone,
So, I guess I'll have to pass on your invitation to a game.

Needless to say,
It is a long, breathtaking story.

Thanks to God
For giving me a back-up lung during my crisis.

Thanks also to Dr. Bryan M. Solmos
For making every new day a breath of fresh air.

SHADOWS OF SUBSTANCE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Woman walking
In the crisp dimness of the night,
Shadowed by the street lights,
Bathed in their electric hum.
Her silhouette,
A shadow of substance,
Is stepping toward me
Or stepping away;
It's hard to say.
This distance plays tricks on my eyes
And on my longings
As I stand
(In another's eyes)
In the crisp dimness of the night,
Shadowed by the street lights,
Bathed in their electric hum,
A shadow of substance
Standing still.
I SEE YOU WALKING IN THE NIGHT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I see you walking in the night
With your plethora of musings
And I discover in the lightless light
I'm a slave to your choosings

And though I've sung this song
A million times before
And another million times
My secret choir will sing these chords
I do not want to see you go
But fate has struck a different blow

THE QUESTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Where is my better half?--
The one who adds life...
Enticement to the performance,
Pulling people in
Through the use of
Drama,
Creative infusions of the dream world
Into the real world,
Life to life--
Heart to heart--
Actors to audience--
Actress to actor.
Don't ask me how I know
What is left of the nothing I began with.
I only know that I want whom I've never had.
And I still wait for
The inevitability of possibility,
Swinging its way
Through the jungle of broken dreams.
